Trampolines have become increasingly popular over the last couple of years. Many parents allow their children to use them without supervising them carefully. Every parent needs to understand the risk of trampolines before they use them. You also need to educate your children about them and ensure they use them responsibly.
Mitigating the Risks
There are a number of things that parents can do to reduce the risks that their children will sustain broken bones or other injuries. Here are some things that you will need to keep in mind.
Don’t Allow Fancy Moves
Many children try to do really crazy stunts when they are using a trampoline for the first time. You need to make sure that they understand how easy it can be to lose their balance. Tell them that they aren’t allowed to do front flips, somersaults and other crazy moves that could get them injured.
Choose Trampolines Carefully
Some trampolines are made much more safely than others. Most trampolines made after 1999 have extra padding and a firmer structure to reduce the risk of falls. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission soon found that many of those precautions weren’t sufficient. You will need to review trampolines carefully and assess how safe they are before buying them.
Only Use them On Level Ground
You need to make sure that your trampoline is on perfectly level ground. This reduces the risk that it will jostle while your child is using it. They will also distribute their weight more evenly so they don’t lose their balance.
Many children try to use trampolines and engage in other activities at the same time. This can be very dangerous. Make sure that your child is completely focused on their safety when using a trampoline. You may want to make sure that it isn’t near basketball hoops or anything else that they may want to use while on a trampoline.
Limit the Number of Children Using it at Any Time
You should limit the number of children who can use a trampoline at any time. Having more than three kids on it can cause the pad to oscillate a lot more and increase the risk of injury.
