{REVIEW} Kindle Fire

I am a single, working mother to a tween, a frugalista and a techie.  I love saving money and trying new things, whether it be products, websites or activities.  I like to switch things up in my life by recycling a variety of activities over time.  I’ve always been a reader, but reading kinda fell by the wayside for a while.  I got an iPhone a few years ago and downloaded the Kindle app for iPhone.  I started reading more again.  From there, I became enthralled with the books available to me; from fiction to cookbooks to self-help and even humor.  I liked the fact that I could FINALLY tear myself away from the computer, but still have limited access to the net.

Insert Kindle Fire.

WHY IT’S GOOD FOR ME:

  • It’s bigger than an iPhone, but smaller than a laptop.  It’s perfect for watching a movie or following a recipe while cooking in the kitchen
  • I can’t bend the pages and I never lose my place!
  • I feel like I’m reading a real book (size)
  • Book storage is AMAZING.  You can carry a ton of books with you.
  • Price versus a traditional tablet
  • I have Amazon Prime.  For $80 a year I get 1 free book per month (*limited selection), free movies, free tv showsand free 2Day Shipping.
  • Battery life
  • Inexpensive cases
  • Display – HQ

WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE:

  • Lack of Extensive App Storage
  • Keyboard.  Maybe it’s just me, but whenever I try to type things I always end up hitting the “.” (period) key instead of space.  I’ve had it for two months.  It’s not changing.
  • No 3g/4G Wireless
  • No Flash (I’m not finding it.  If I’m missing it PLEASE let me know).  I can’t play FARMVILLE, only Farmville Express.
  • The single button takes some getting used to

WHAT’S MISSING, BUT NOT MISSED:

  • If you bought it for the books, you’re not missing the
    • Lack of camera
    • Lack of Microphone
    • Lack of GPS
    • Lack of Bluetooth

Overall, if you’re looking for a replacement to the iPad or an Android tablet, I would not recommend it.  If you’re looking for an e-reader with a little kick (i.e. tv, movies with Netflix & Hulu) than this is the device for you.  I can also access Facebook, Twitter and other social networking apps.  I’ve also downloaded Cozi Family Organizer.  Other than that, there is not much app space.  I can definitely say that other than books, I find myself using the Kindle Fire mostly for intermittent internet access and recipes.

For the price, I highly recommend it, if you’re just looking for something that’s bigger than your phone, more portable than a computer and that you can read books on.
