Email Hell

I'm in email hell.  I currently have over 18,000 emails which is the result of years of subscriptions to companies, blogs, survey sites and more.  Although, what's currently in my inbox only goes back to December 2011 it's still sad, overwhelming and unmanageable.

I've set myself a goal to UNSUBSCRIBE to at least 10 emails per day, not including my fellow blogger's feeds and newsletters or other companies I'm truly interested in.  If it's a sale type newsletter, I've decided that if I have not purchased anything from the company since last year's Christmas holiday, they are being REMOVED from my life!! I will find them again if I need them.

The problem I'm running into as a blogger, is that even though I have a separate email for my site and (several) separate emails for personal, financial and more is that my inbox has become like the world's largest Twitter account.  The emails come faster than I can read them.

I use Gmail, so I feel like part of my issue is that I can't sort by sender.  I tried using multiple email clients to manage this, but it ended up getting so slow due to the number of emails I received daily.  It might have been before I got a new computer in December, though.

Does anyone else have similar problems? How do you deal?

i’m just starting to try to start a blog but i still know how you feel. 1. i think multiple e-mails are actually a mistake. you waste time going between accounts and depending on your connection waiting for them to load. who needs something else to keep up with. 2. i get between 500 and 800 emails a day. when i first log in in the mornings i have about 200. i set up for 100 per page and delete the sales and immediately take care of anything urgent. this takes me down to about 100. i re-set to 10 per page and start at the oldest. i can usually get through all 200 hundred plus the incoming in 30 to 45 minutes. i check back every 2 or 3 hours. 3. turn off your email alerts. if it’s family urgent—-hello, it’s called a telephone. email alerts are one of the biggest time wasting distractions there is. 4. if you’ve got that many delete them by the page of 100. if it’s older than a month it’s like lettuce that’s been in the frig for a month. ooey gooey and not for human consumption.5. if your still desperate in gmail there is a way to organize by sender. you that unsubscriber thing for gmal that’s giving away an ipad. they have an organizer for gmail as well. yipperbear ps. the reason for the 10 per page is you get a little sense of accomplishment every 10 email and it keeps you going. also, if it’s a giveaway email or post i want to read i put it in a bookmark folder. then, i do those as time permits.

Thanks for the great tips!! I’m trying to eliminate multiple emails. Currently all of my email address come into to one email box, so that helps. I’ll definitely use these tips and I’ll be sure to check out the email organizer from Unsubscriber. BTW, were you able to get the Unsubscriber to work. I tried it, but wasn’t sure how to tell if it was working.

I don’t know what to say. I have a similar problem. I hate to unsubscribe to blogs, but I sometimes happen to. And about the time I unsubscribe from a company, it will be one I need.

I do feel your pain. I believe it is an issue bloggers have to deal with!

I can commiserate. I use several email addresses. One for family and friends. One for writing-related work. One for social networking. And one for any suspicious advertisers who might try to spam me later.

Good luck unsubscribing. There are two advertisers who won’t take no for an answer–which makes me glad I gave them my potential spammers email addy.

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one out there in email hell! Nice use of commiserate!!

Most of the things I’m unsubscribing from are major retailers that I subscribed to when I focused on deal/coupon based blogging. Not only did I decide there were too many deal/coupon bloggers out there, but it was information overload!
