I'm likely going against the grain by posting this, but I'm curious.
I recently read an article titled '10 Simple Ways to Get More Blog Comments'. I read this because I not only want comments on my posts, but I want to engage my readers with content that applies to them. Without comments, how can I accomplish this?
When it comes to blog comments—and user participation online in general— researcher Jakob Nielsen found something called the 90-9-1 rule.
On average, 90 percent of your blog’s readers will never comment on a blog post (he calls them “consumers”). 9 percent will comment from time to time (called “contributors”). And only 1 percent will regularly leave a thoughtful response that adds to the value of your post (the “creators”).

I don’t worry about comments. I guess I should?
Probably explains why I’m in the 90%. Well, I guess I can’t be because I’m commenting!?
Interesting read, I love statistics.
Tell me again, why do we care if people comment or not?

If I'm being honest I'm in that 9% bracket, though would love to be in the 1%.
Unfortunately I tend to hold back if I haven't got something to say that a) is related directly to and b) will potentially enhance the content of the post, as where comments are concerned I really do believe it's the quality and not the quantity of what you receive (and indeed leave!) that is important.
For every 'Wow, fab!' or 'Great post' there will be one standout comment that tells me that my post and it's content has connected with the reader and they've taken their valuable time to sit and think about what they are writing and that is more important to me as a writer than just a numbers game! So whereas it really is wonderful to see that ticker going up and up, I'd much rather 5 thoughtful post related comments than a handful of 'just passing through' comments.
Apologies for the waffle, I appear to have gone off on a tangent!!

No apologies necessary, Natalie! Your thoughts make sense. I tend to waver between that and wanting at least a peep out of someone! To me it helps identify which posts people are actually reading and enjoying even if the comment is lackluster. Even my stats can’t tell me what someone thought about a post. I see both sides. What to do? Hrrrmmmm.
